What it takes to send business SMS in Ghana
- MTN requires a registered sender. Since 8 July 2026, Twilio blocks unregistered senders on MTN Ghana; registration takes 2–3 weeks.
- Numeric senders fail on Airtel, MTN and Glo through Twilio.
- Local providers approve your sender name in a few hours (NALO) to a few business days (Arkesel). MTN's own bulk service asks for NCA certification, company documents, a letterhead and an ID.
- A name can't receive replies.
Sending from your own SIM in Ghana
Ghanaian operators sell SMS bundles, for example MTN 900 SMS for GHS 11.14 (30 days) and Telecel Boss with 500 SMS (GHS 50).
- Characters: English fits in 160 characters. Through Twilio's domestic route, characters outside the basic alphabet are replaced or removed.
- Number format: Ghanaian mobile numbers have 10 digits starting with 02 or 05, or +233 in international format.
- How it works: install the DroidSender app on an Android phone, upload your list from Excel or use the API, and the phone sends each text from your number. Replies arrive in one inbox on your computer.
