What it takes to send business SMS in Nigeria

  • Sender ID registration. Twilio requires a registered sender in Nigeria (about 3 weeks internationally, 2–3 weeks domestically); unregistered senders are only tried on a best-effort basis.
  • Numeric senders fail on MTN, Airtel and 9mobile through Twilio, so customers don't see a number they can call or text back.
  • DND (do not disturb) can block messages to some subscribers, according to Twilio.
  • Local providers use a sender name of up to 11 characters, and some ask for KYC for higher limits.

Sending from your own SIM in Nigeria

  • Characters: English and Nigerian Pidgin fit in 160 characters. Emojis switch the SMS to 70 characters.
  • Number format: Nigerian mobile numbers have 11 digits starting with 070, 080, 081, 090 or 091, or +234 in international format.
  • How it works: install the DroidSender app on an Android phone, upload your list from Excel or use the API, and the phone sends each text from your number. Replies arrive in one inbox on your computer.
