What it takes to send business SMS in Portugal
- No sender registration with Twilio. Portugal accepts alphanumeric senders (a company name) without pre-registration.
- A name can't receive replies. For replies you need a mobile number, and Twilio rents a Portuguese mobile number for $135 a month.
- Local providers validate your sender name before the first campaign (3 to 11 characters, representing your company).
Local SMS providers in Portugal
Portuguese SMS providers charge, for 1,000 texts: Closum €29.50 (€0.0295 each), SMSBulk €42.80 (€0.0428) and Vodafone SMS Shot €39.16, all plus VAT. Vodafone's service can only be requested by the company's telecoms manager. For 2,000 texts a month that is roughly €59–86 plus VAT.

Sending from your own SIM in Portugal
Portuguese mobile plans with unlimited texts start at €12.99 a month, for example MEO M Móvel Ilimitado and NOS Pós-pago dados Ilimitado.
- Characters: Most Portuguese accents (ã, õ, á, â, ê, í, ó, ô, ú, ç) switch an SMS from 160 to 70 characters, which can double the cost on a per-message service. Only é and à fit in a normal SMS.
