What it takes to send business SMS in the US
- A2P 10DLC registration. Business texting from a normal 10-digit US number requires registering your brand and your use case ("campaign"): a one-time brand fee ($4.50), optional vetting ($41.50) and a monthly campaign fee, plus the wait for approval.
- Carrier fees on every message. On top of $0.0083, Twilio passes on carrier fees per segment: AT&T $0.0035, T-Mobile $0.0045, Verizon $0.005.
- A number to rent. $1.15 a month for a local number, $2.15 for toll-free (which needs its own verification). Short codes take 6–10 weeks.
- No brand names. Alphanumeric sender IDs are not supported in the US.
Local SMS providers in the US
US texting platforms bundle the registration for you: EZ Texting starts at $25 a month for 500 credits plus a $5 telecom fee and assigns you a new local number; Textellent starts at $59 a month for 750 credits plus $49 activation and can text-enable your existing business line.
With DroidSender, 2,000 texts are included in the Starter plan at $11.99 a month, sent from your own number.
Sending from your own SIM in the US
US prepaid plans with unlimited texts start around $15 a month (Connect by T-Mobile); Verizon Prepaid Talk & Text is $35 a month.
- Characters: English fits in 160 characters. Emojis and curly quotes switch the message to 70 characters, so a long text costs 2 or 3 segments.
- Number format: US numbers have 10 digits, written +1 and the area code, for example +1 415 555 0100.
- How it works: install the DroidSender app on an Android phone, upload your list from Excel or use the API, and the phone sends each text from your number. Replies arrive in one inbox on your computer.
